TIC3 is the fourth generation of TIC software which was originally called TMC office in 1997.

Over the past 15 years, the TIC product has been continuously improved using GEWI’s Quality Management System (QMS). This system provides for continuous feedback and improvement from customers, as well as every member of GEWI’s customer project, product development and marketing & sales teams. This feedback is an input to GEWI’s “product change request” (PCR) system.

Each week, as an output of the PCR system, GEWI releases a new developmental version of TIC. After testing, new versions are made available as customer releases four times per year.

Even as TIC continues to improve, some customers are still operating previous versions of the software. GEWI fully supports each version as long as one customer purchases support and maintenance for that product generation. This means customers have control over when they decide to move to the latest TIC version.

GEWI’s marketing & sales team, along with leaders from the product development and customer projects teams met in Farnborough, England to discuss, analyze and plan growth in the TIC Traffic News for Radio market.

TIC has already been used as a solution for this market for many years, but new TIC features along with new customer requirements have provided an opportunity for TIC’s usage to be extended in this market.

The setting for the meeting was at the Farnborough Airport, where British aviation was born in 1908. This location also provided an opportunity for GEWI staff to learn about the advancements in aviation technology, and provide a creative brainstorming environment to allow new ways of thinking about markets, technologies and products, which could ultimately provide benefits to the TIC product and our customers.

Later this year, similar meetings have been organized for the Product Development and Customer Projects teams, as well as GEWI’s company-wide business workshop and 20th anniversary celebration in September 2012.

GEWI is pleased to have again passed the audit for ISO quality standards certification. This marks 15 consecutive years that GEWI has been ISO certified. This year GEWI was awarded the ISO 9001:2008 certification. With the topic of quality at the top of our minds, we felt that quality would be an excellent theme for this GEWI newsletter.

GEWI’s co-founder, Karl Will, is responsible for the ISO certification process. Read more about his extensive experience and history of quality management in the GEWI profile section.

Data quality is important to all customers, whether for public or private sector, broadcast or navigation. In this newsletter we will review TIC features which help to ensure that the highest level of data quality can be achieved by operators of TIC for the benefit of travelers and consumers.

TIC for the iPad can also provide benefits for data quality allowing mobile traffic data entry and the ability to compare real-world data in the field with what is being distributed to users.

We also take a look at upcoming events that GEWI will be attending including the Asia Pacific ITS Forum in Kuala Lampur and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada USA.

For a self-demonstration of product features, we invite you to view the TIC Product Videos which have recently been updated at www.gewi.com. In any case, to discuss your requirements, please contact us at info@gewi.com.

TIC Connects: Operators and Information

TIC can “relate” various data types providing operators a meaningful view of relevant data.

Data quality is an issue for every consumer of traffic data, whether for navigation, broadcast or public or for private sector customers.

TIC’s flexible architecture allows for the collection of a wide variety of data. The intuitive visualization and presentation of this data in order to understand how each data is related is of critical importance.

Often data is entered by multiple operators, along with data that is automatically created, or collected from third party sources. This presents the risk of distributing duplicated, overlapping or conflicting data.

TIC has features designed to allow operators to quickly identify and resolve these potential data conflicts. Additionally, by viewing all available data related to an incident such as cameras, weather and speed, an operator is able to quickly determine the actual conditions and to enter data that accurately represents the real-world traffic conditions.

GEWI Quality Recognized With ISO Certification

During its 20 year history, quality, stability and flexibility are three attributes for which GEWI has become recognized. To maintain quality, GEWI has been ISO certified annually since 1997.

In February of 2012, TÜV Rheinland Cert, an independent quality system certification body, certified GEWI ISO 9001:2008 compliant, certification number #01 100 85120.

This ISO standard specifies the minimum requirements for the Quality Management System (QMS). Compliance to this standard certifies that GEWI is managing processes effectively, free of errors and with strong process controls.

GEWI has developed its own QMS using new methods with continuous improvement of QMS practices. The GEWI corporations in North America and Asia also participate with the focus on absolute customer satisfaction.

The QMS is reflected in the quality of GEWI’s business systems and GEWI products, including TIC, ultimately benefiting GEWI customers.

Beyond customer satisfaction, GEWI is continually working to optimize internal processes to result in greater efficiency in workflow to keep costs down and continuously improving GEWI products with every new product release.

With 2012 marking GEWI’s 20th anniversary as a company and 15th year of the TIC product, it appears that the work which has been done to develop, maintain and support the QMS processes has been worthwhile not just for GEWI, but for our global customer base as well.

GEWI at NAB 2012 Las Vegas: Traffic News for Radio

The theme of NAB 2012 is “where content comes to life”.

This theme is very appropriate considering that many TIC features help to create and deliver quality content to broadcasters and their listeners.

TIC can be used for a wide range of purposes including radio data services, and traffic news for radio.

All of the main TIC features (collect, store, view, monitor, create, distribute) involve the flexible, efficient management of data which becomes content for GEWI customers.

GEWI Quality Management System – Constant Product Improvement

During its 20 year history, quality, stability and flexibility are three attributes for which GEWI has become recognized. To maintain quality, GEWI has been ISO certified annually since 1997. In February of 2012, TÜV Rheinland Cert, an independent quality system certification body, certified GEWI ISO 9001:2008 compliant.
This standard provides a set of requirements for a Quality Management System (QMS). Compliance to this standard certifies that GEWI is managing processes effectively, free of errors and with strong process controls.
GEWI has developed their own QMS using new methods with continuous improvement of QMS practices. The GEWI corporations in North America and Asia also participate with the focus on absolute customer satisfaction.
Beyond customer satisfaction, GEWI is continually working to optimize internal processes to result in greater efficiency in workflow resulting in continued product excellence.
With 2012 marking GEWI’s 20th anniversary as a company and 15th year of the TIC product, it appears that the work involved to develop, maintain and support the QMS processes has been worthwhile not just for GEWI, but for our global customer base as well.

Police forces in every German federal state are already using TIC. Broadcasting companies from all over the world work with the software developed in Saxony-Anhalt, as do commercial traffic information service providers, road construction authorities, transport ministries, automotive manufacturers and manufacturers of satellite navigation systems. They are all customers of GEWI Europe GmbH & Co. KG in Bernburg.

In September, GEWI will be 20 years old and its core product, TIC, will be 15.
The founders of GEWI, Hagen Geppert and Karl Will, will be celebrating together with their employees and customers located all over the world. After all, GEWI now consists of three companies, GEWI Europe based in Germany, GEWI North America based in Texas and GEWI Asia Pacific in Singapore. The company also has offices in Great Britain. The headquarters are located in Bernburg.

A set-up such as this was something Geppert and Will would never have dreamed of 20 years ago. Back then, both of them worked in the Staßfurt television factory. After the fall of the iron curtain, neither of them really knew what was going to come of the factory so television technician Geppert and testing and control engineer Will decided to go it alone and set up GEWI in their own front rooms. They had no office, no employees and began to develop new television components.

From the television factory, they had been assigned with a task which led them to one of the state’s research groups. Together with broadcasting company WDR, television manufacturer Bosch and the police, they developed solutions to improve traffic information for motorists. “As a result of this, we got an insight into the traffic information processing market,” remembers Geppert. This is where the idea to develop a piece of software for the collection, recording, processing and distribution of the latest traffic information came from in 1996. Geppert and Will speak of “real time traffic information”, combinations of which could also lead to new information. This information is transferred via a number of channels such as the internet, mobile phones, digital television, satellite navigation systems or PDAs. The first customer for this kind of technology was the radio station “Antenne Thüringen”. Nowadays, not only do all MDR radio stations work with TIC, but also a large number of radio stations in Austria, Switzerland and other stations represented in the European broadcasting union.

Geppert uses the example of a road traffic accident to explain the path of the traffic information through TIC. “Police officers who are called to the scene of an accident enter the information manually and then send it to their respective traffic reporting office. From here, the information is then entered into the TIC system in coded form. A notification is then shown to the user, such as a radio station, automatically. The notification appears within a matter of seconds.” At the same time, the software helps to process information so that it can be seamlessly introduced to the format of the programme and its journalistic style. Once finished, the processed accident notification is displayed on the screen where the presenter can read it out. “As well as being displayed on a screen in the radio station studio, the notification can also be sent to satellite navigation systems, smartphones or commercial online services,” explains Will.

The company achieved its breakthrough in 2001 when the Bavarian police service began using TIC. This was so successful that other federal states wanted to follow suit and work with TIC. The police services of all 16 federal states have been GEWI customers since 2005. In 2004, the market in North America was opened up through cooperation with the American satellite navigation mapping company NAVTEQ. Today, GEWI is considered a global leader for solutions transmitting real time traffic information directly to vehicles. “We can gather, process and distribute traffic information like no other company,” says Geppert.

This is something that is valued by 125 customers worldwide which Geppert divides into four groups. Group one contains radio stations and group two is the police service in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The third group consists of commercial service providers who distribute higher-quality information in return for a fee. These include providers of digital mapping and satellite navigation unit manufacturers such as NAVTEQ, TomTom and Garmin. Partnerships are maintained with BMW and Audi. The fourth group consists of other authorities and agencies, including road construction authorities, transport ministries and traffic information computer centres.

The latest version of the software, now the fourth generation of TIC, can do more than simply process traffic information. The focus still remains on traffic, but now indirectly associated data such as environmental or medical information can now also be processed. “The aim of this is to open up new areas of application and new markets,” says Geppert. “We are getting more and more involved in the traffic management market.” 25 GEWI employees currently work in this area, more than double that of ten years ago.

Twelve of these employees solely focus on the further development of the software. According to CFO Will, company turnover has also doubled to € 2.5m. The fathers of the TIC system exhibit at international trade fairs three of four times a year. This year, they are travelling to Malaysia in April, to the USA in May and, just like last year in Orlando, to the ITS World Congress for Intelligent Transport Systems which is taking place this year in Vienna.
