GEWI Mourns Loss of David Marsh

GEWI is saddened to report that David Marsh lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on 26 June 2012. David has been a member of GEWI’s marketing and sales team since 2005 and was globally respected for his contributions in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

Recently, David’s contributions had been recognized with a Fellowship awarded by the Traveller Information Services Association (TISA) during their General Assembly in Brussels, by unanimous decision of the TISA Committee.

Before joining GEWI, David enjoyed a long and diverse career including live broadcasting of traffic on radio and television. Off the air, David was responsible for the development of the traffic services with the UK Automobile Association (AA). In his 30 year career in traffic, David represented the AA on the European RDS-TMC (Traffic Message Channel) working party, was Chairman of the EU supported TMC Forum and Executive Vice President of the European Road Information Centre (ERIC) in Geneva. David was also instrumental in the development of British Airways’ first fully automated flight information system BA FlightWatch.

David Marsh was also a former Director of SCOTIA (Scottish Travel Information Association), former Chairman of the TMC Forum, and former Executive Vice President of ERIC (European Road Information Centre) Geneva. In his career, David worked with a wide range of international companies including BMW, Garmin, Honda, INRIX, NAVTEQ, Nokia, TomTom, Trafficmaster, Vodafone, and many more.

David was first introduced to GEWI in 1997 when he managed Andrew Kristoffy (Andy) while they worked together at the AA to demonstrate the UK’s first RDS-TMC traffic information system, using GEWI’s first generation TIC product. Andy left the AA to work for GEWI in 2000 to eventually become GEWI’s Director of Marketing and Sales, and both were reunited five years later when David joined GEWI. Andy said of David, “I miss him deeply as a friend. In business we will miss his enviable ability to connect genuinely, personally and professionally with nearly everyone, across all cultures worldwide. And if it weren’t for David’s skill and enthusiasm to guide and support people new to the ITS industry as I was 15 years ago, I would not be where I am today. Thank you David.”

GEWI’s CEO Hagen Geppert commented “Words cannot adequately express our feeling of loss with the passing of David Marsh. More than a colleague, he was a friend, advisor, and visionary whose contributions will live on in GEWI products for the benefit of travelers worldwide”.
