We all know how challenging it can be to share data efficiently between systems. Imagine adding the complexity of 22 different countries and 7 different languages. That's exactly what the European Road Information Center (ERIC) has been doing using the GEWI platform since 2001.

CASE STUDY: European Road Information Center
The European Road Information Center, ERIC, was formed in 1967 with the goal of distributing real time road information between participating countries.
Headquartered in Geneva, ERIC was formed by a consortium of Automobile Clubs who shared the goal of increasing the quality of traffic and travel information that is available to their members.
In 2001, ERIC deployed GEWI's ERIC2000 system to provide for the exchange of traffic data between 22 countries in 7 different languages. The current system, ERIC3000 uses the TIC software platform from GEWI to create, synchronize, monitor and distribute traffic data to all of the ERIC members.
Over 4 million traffic messages annually are processed by the system which covers more than 80% of the European roadways and over 450 million European travelers.
This real-time traffic data is integrated into navigation systems in more than 40 million vehicles which provide intelligent routing solutions to steer motorists away from areas of congestion and traffic incidents.
In 2002, ERIC management established performance measures for message accuracy, connectivity, codification and latency. This has been documented into a Service Level Agreement, or SLA which allows ERIC management to work with all members to ensure the quality of information is consistently high across all partners.
By any measure, ERIC has been an overwhelming success. This is reflected in the extremely high membership ratio in each of the participating Auto Clubs. TIC for DOT Traveler Information Services
Upgrades and Deployment
TIC is a highly configurable commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution.
TIC can easily integrate with existing data and system components, including other vendor solutions.
New deployments can also be implemented, from small to large, either on-site or via the Internet.
TIC's architecture is designed to meet a wide variety of customer requirements.
TIC is easily configured to collect, store, create and distribute using many existing and new data types.
TIC can distribute data, including personalized data, to web sites, telephone systems (IVR), PDA, DMS, RDS-TMC, HAR and more.
Data Harmonization
TIC uses standard or custom rules for:
  • Aggregation.
  • Fusing and merging.
  • Forecasting.
  • Extrapolation
  • Creating statistics.
  • Analyzing performance indicators
  • Estimating best work zone times
  • And more...
Automatic Operation
TIC can automatically create and distribute data, and operators can still optionally approve selected data during peak times.
For example, traffic and event data can be automatically generated from speed and flow and GPS data.
As conditions change, TIC quickly updates data to reflect current conditions such as traffic flows.
Data Capture on PDA
PDA's can be used by commuters, courtesy patrols, DOT employees and law enforcement agencies to create and send traffic and GPS data.

GEWI's PROS Method
The TIC software platform has been solving transportation related problems for our clients since 1992. Over the years, GEWI has formalized this problem solving process using the P.R.O.S method by identifying Problems, Requirements, Options and Solutions.
Identifying the problems allows us to capture the specific need a client has that can be solved with the TIC software.
Defining the requirements takes the problem to the next level of detail. Identifying exactly what feature or function is required to solve the client problem.
Given the flexibility of the TIC software, there are often multiple approaches that may be taken to meet the client requirements. The various options are presented to the client and reviewed in detail.
Based on the detailed options review, a solution is agreed upon and a deployment plan is scheduled.
