Greetings!

As 2011 draws to a close, GEWI prepares to attend Gulf Traffic in Dubai and looks ahead to 2012, our 20th year of producing hardware and software for the processing of traffic data.

Global project requirements since 1997 have been built into the TIC product as features for our broad customer base which includes governments, commercial service providers, automobile clubs, road operators, car and navigation manufacturers, as well as radio stations, which will be the featured market in this edition.  TIC is used by broadcasters not just for traffic news, but also for radio associated data, as used by MDR and described in this issue.

We'll also profile Enrico Kalle, the Team Leader for the TIC Smart Client and provide a quick summary of ITS World Congress which was an extremely busy show for GEWI including receiving TV coverage on FOX TV of the GEWI / BMW Connected Vehicle Demonstration.

Several new videos have been produced for GEWI's web site describing various TIC product features.  Look for them on the main page at www.gewi.com

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season from everyone at GEWI Europe, GEWI Asia Pacific and GEWI North America!
GEWI Connected Vehicle Demo Makes News in Orlando

GEWI on FOX TVThe GEWI / BMW Connected Vehicle Demo at the ITS World Congress Technology Showcase was very well attended by both convention visitors as well as media.

Matthias Defee, GEWI's Director of Customer Projects-Worldwide, was interviewed by FOX News about the GEWI Local Hazard Warning demonstration.  The hazard warning is designed to deliver alerts directly into the vehicle about hazards on the road ahead, resulting in increased safety.  This means drivers are warned about hazards well in advance of being able to visibly see the hazard in the road.

 TIC for Traffic News Reporting

TIC News Story Window

Producing traffic news reports to be read by people has a completely different set of requirements than for traffic that needs to be "read" by systems such as ATIS or Navigation devices.

TIC, however, was designed to do both right from the beginning, not as an add-on.

Since 1999, TIC has been used to create traffic news for broadcasters, and the latest features built into TIC for this market are very exciting.

TIC for Traffic News Reporting can be used to create traffic news for multiple radio stations or broadcasters within a single TIC system.

Traffic news data can be collected from external sources, or manually created using the TIC Smart Client.

Operators can create multiple stories or variations about news events.  Then, several attributes can be assigned including: urgency, top story priority, and ability to hide stories.  Each news story can also be shared in different variations, depending on the radio program requirements, including distribution in different languages.

From these stories, a News Report is created which can be filtered based on story ranking, duration of report and system configuration.

These News Reports are then published and can be read by announcers from the screen.  The published news report can also be distributed in whatever format is required, including TIC3 XML, TIC3 Text, RSS, Twitter and more.

Traffic News Reporting is just one of many markets for which TIC can be used and can reduce the number of systems which need to be operated.  Click here to view more, or visit the GEWI web site, www.gewi.com

MDR Uses TIC for Radio Data

TIC for RDS

German broadcaster MDR, operating 8 radio programs in three federal states in Middle Germany, has been using TIC for Traffic News Reporting since 1999.

MDR is now also using TIC for processing Radio Associated Data, defined as additional information to the audio program such as station name, list of broadcast frequencies, song title, text message, images (album cover, photos, etc.) electronic program guides, RDS-TMC, TPEG and more.

TIC is used to collect content from multiple feeds, harmonize the data, and then distribute the data as RDS over FM as well as over Digital Radio (DAB+), Satellite Radio and Internet Radio for all of their eight radio channels.

What MDR appreciates about the TIC system is the efficiency TIC provides by using a single TIC system to process Program Associated Data, and for Traffic News.

This is just another example of the tremendous flexibility built into TIC whereby TIC can be configured for one or multiple uses, based on customer requirements.

The conference will be held December 12-14th at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, UAE.  Look for GEWI's exhibition at stand #3F10 and view the latest TIC product features including TIC for iPad which provides an excellent solution for Mobile Traffic Data Entry.

Gulf Traffic promises to be  the largest event in the Middle East that covers Road Safety and ITS. The conference will present some of the most influential international experts who will speak about global best practices and how they can be implemented in the region.

 ITS World Congress Review

ITS World Congress Orlando

The GEWI exhibition at ITS World Congress in Orlando represented the largest participation in the company's 19 year history.  With the introduction of TIC for iPad for Mobile Traffic Data entry, a new marketing message - TIC CONNECTS, and several in-conference promotions, there was a high volume of traffic at both the Indoor and Outdoor GEWI exhibits.
