Performance is a concern whether in the context of systems, people or products, in both the public and private sector.  From the wise old business saying "you can't manage what you don't measure" the new TIC Real-Time Statistics product feature now provides those important measurements needed for performance indicators.  You'll find more details on TIC Real-Time Statistics in this issue, along with information on Nils Richter, the GEWI developer responsible for this TIC product feature.


GEWI is continually improving the features and performance of the TIC software product.  In addition to weekly tests, intensive "TestFests" are run with several of the GEWI's teams.  Read more about that in this issue.


Dubai, Tokyo and Cologne Germany were just some of the cities included on GEWI's recent travel schedule as the company continues to exhibit, attend and be represented at conferences.  GEWI also gathers information on market requirements which could be solved using TIC.  These are all critical activities to ensure GEWI continues to develop the TIC product to meet standards used by its by customers, such as OpenLR, and TPEG technology, both of which are also featured in this newsletter.

GEWI at Gulf Traffic - Dubai

GEWI will be attending the Gulf Traffic Exhibition, Conference and Awards in Dubai from 09-11 December 2013. GEWI CEO Hagen Geppert will be joining over 100 international exhibitors exhibiting the latest technologies in Intelligent Transportation Systems.


The Gulf Region has been important to GEWI for many years. Since 2010, the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has been using TIC to process probe data from about 8,000 taxis in order to calculate traffic flow for the whole of Dubai. This traffic flow calculation is augmented by using data from fixed sensors. Based on the harmonized traffic flow TIC derives traffic events for those roadways. In addition, operators use TIC to create their own traffic events based on information captured on the traffic control room's video wall. Finally, TMC messages are generated and broadcasted through RDS.


The Gulf Traffic Conference will be held at the Dubai International Convention & Exposition Center. Conference highlights include a presentation from the former Director of British Petroleum, an update on ITS from the Director of Transport for London and many free seminars on vehicle detection, traffic safety, logistics management and more.

TIC Product Feature:  Real-Time Statistics (RTS)
TIC Statistics

Traffic operators looking to measure performance of roadways, agencies or even individual teams now have a new tool with Real-Time Statistics (RTS) available in TIC3 from GEWI.


Real-time statistics can be used to analyze any data stored on TIC and to provide a visual overview of the results.


Simple line graphs and bar-charts can be created in real-time such as in the dashboard view above which can be used to compare current and historical performance.


As an example, some pre-defined performance measures for traffic and travel event data include: 

  • Length of stopped traffic
  • Number of operator tasks
  • Number of events by road class
  • Number of events by event category
  • Number of events by urgency
  • Number of events from other sources
  • ...and many more

The statistics can also be scheduled to be exported at specific times such as at the end of each day or week and these can be automatically distributed by email.


If more detailed analysis or a different presentation format is required, the same statistical data can be exported in XML or CSV format and then imported into third-party analytical tools or spread sheet applications.


As a simple example using the same date exported in one of the dashboard windows above, the same data is shown in an Excel spreadsheet with a resulting pie chart.


Excel chart TIC Real-Time Statistics can significantly improve operators' and managers' ability to achieve a better understanding of trends, patterns and conditions and corresponding workloads on operators.  Analysis of these statistics can allow for a better deployment of resources to manage the road network and human resources.

  GEWI Attends OpenLR™ Location Referencing Conference
Open LR banner A very important factor in operating a traffic and travel service is the ability to ensure that the original location reference will result in the same location on a receiving device or system, even when a different location referencing method or map is used.  

For example, if a location is encoded by a service provider using one map maker's digital map data, but the receiving device or system uses a different map, then the location data is unlikely to be correctly understood.

A solution to this problem is to use the license-free standard called OpenLR™ (LR stands for location reference) as a kind of translator or converter between two different maps.  


OpenLR™ is developed by TomTom as a method to encode, transmit and decode location data, irrespective of the digital road network used.


Recently, a group of organizations from the navigation, automotive, device and location based services (LBS) industries met in Bergisch Gladbach, near Cologne Germany to discuss issues related to the OpenLR location referencing standard.

GEWI developer Thomas Rothe, who also serves as Group Chairman of TISA's TMC location table release team, attended the conference along with over 90 others with interest in the navigation and traffic market.  The attendance was higher than expected and indicated strong interest in OpenLR™ and a recognition of the many advantages of OpenLR™ which could well be the popular method for on-the-fly location referencing in the future.


Several industry experts presented on a variety of topics and projects surrounding OpenLR™ including acquisition of public data, TPEG implementation, and methods to increase the success rate of accurately matching between different maps.  

The success rate is already quite good, with successful matching in 96.8% of cases between TomTom and HERE maps.


GEWI will fully implement OpenLR™ into the TIC product by early 2014 which means that location referencing technology will be fully integrated into all of the main TIC features and may be purchased for use in projects in all TIC markets.

GEWI "TestFests" Ensure System Stability 
In addition to the weekly testing of TIC Software improvements, which precedes each weekly developmental release, GEWI also organizes several "TestFest" events each year for intensive focused testing on specific product components or features. 

The most recent TestFest was held in GEWI's main offices in Bernburg, Germany from 30 September to 02 October. Each TestFest has a specific topic or background depending on upcoming projects that are scheduled to go live, or based on new features that are incorporated into a quarterly product release.


Recent testing has focused on new features related to entering TTE (Traffic and Travel Events) to ensure all commands, tooltips and features are working as expected. This testing includes new features and enhancements to the "Relation", "Task" and "Template" features. And, with the new RTS (Real Time Statistics) feature being introduced soon, much testing was also focused around this prototype version.


Testing always involves the entire Product Development team, and often also includes GEWI's Customer Projects (CP) team, who can bring the customer perspective into the process. By involving the CP team, future work can be prioritized by which features are most requested or most popular with GEWI customers.


During and after the test, each tester creates Feedback that describes any problems or new ideas for software enhancements. TIC's User Feedback feature is designed to automatically capture feedback from right within the TIC software. This feature is not only for testing purposes, but is also available to GEWI customers using the TIC software.

GEWI Exhibits and Presents TPEG Paper at ITS World Congress Tokyo

The 20th ITS World Congress was held in Tokyo from 14-18 October, 2013 and GEWI representatives from Germany, Singapore and North America provided TIC product demonstrations at GEWI's stand in the main exhibit hall.


In addition, GEWI North America CEO Jim O'Neill joined other ITS experts from China, Australia and Singapore presenting in a well-attended technical session called "TPEG Services on a Global Scale". The GEWI presentation detailed how TPEG can be used to improve safety in work zones.


Typhoon Wipha made landfall near Tokyo in the early morning hours of Wednesday 16 October, affecting only the morning hours of the conference and exhibition. By 1pm that afternoon the conference had reopened and attendees were back in full force.


The GEWI exhibit featured the TIC Smart Client for Windows and TIC Smart Client for iPad, used for mobile traffic data entry. TIC has been used for more than 15 years as a platform for a wide range of transportation data services, many of which were included in the main conference topics.

Nils has not celebrated his second year with GEWI yet but he has already has been involved in several important TIC product features such as the ability to distribute data to the new graphics based VMS signs and Real-Time Statistics as described in one of the articles of this newsletter. 


Nils graduated with an Engineering Degree in Geodesy and Geoinformation from Munich's Universität der Bundeswehr and Communications Engineering Degree from the University of Applied Science in Dresden, Germany.


As with all members of GEWI's development team, Nils speaks English and German. He also speaks French and Russian. Prior to joining GEWI, Nils was team leader for terrain analysis at Eurocorps in Strasbourg France as well as a leader of Surveying Teams at Bundeswehr Geoinformation office in Kiel, Germany.


Away from the office Nils enjoys climbing, swimming, biking, alpine sports and studying history.
