ITS World Congress in Detroit is just a few weeks away and GEWI will be well represented with staff from North America, Germany and the U.K. in attendance.  In addition to the GEWI stand in the exhibit hall, GEWI and BMW will be exhibiting in the Technology Showcase area giving visitors an opportunity to take a demonstration ride and experience the VMS2Dash connected vehicle demonstration.  GEWI will also be presenting at World Congress in a session on TPEG Traffic Services Worldwide.

By the end of the year, TIC will be adding Incident Management features to the already robust ATIS features, and ITS World Congress visitors can get a preview of how this product feature can be used to manage road incidents.  Rainer Klockmann, GEWI's Director of Product Development, leads the development efforts for the new features and is profiled in this issue. 

New TIC features were discussed at a workshop GEWI recently held for several German Police state representatives.  Read more about the workshop and Grilling with GEWI below.

At ITS World Congress in Detroit, GEWI and BMW will be presenting a connected vehicle demonstration called VMS2Dash.  The ride along demonstration can be found at the ITS Technology Showcase.

Attendees will be able to see information from VMS signs displayed directly on the BMW navigation system as drivers approach the signs.

This technology solves the problem of drivers missing important traffic messages displayed on VMS signs due to obstructions or inability to view because of traffic conditions.

The issue of effective incident management is shared by transportation agencies worldwide.  Whether the incident is on a roadway, or involves infrastructure such as a VMS sign, camera, road weather station, or other transportation asset, the ability to manage and expedite resolution of the incident is of extreme importance.  Of equal importance to managing the incident is the requirement to keep all stakeholders including the media and driving public informed.

All of these requirements will be addressed by the new Incident Management features of TIC3 which will be available for preview at the upcoming ITS World Congress in Detroit.  Each step of the process has been carefully modeled to provide agencies the ability to manage the 5 step process to detect, verify, respond, inform, and clear incidents.

Flexibility has been built into the feature to allow each agency to create customized response plans for each type of incident response.  Workload can be distributed to teams, and each step assigned can be monitored throughout the process.  The entire incident management process including receiving and placing telephone calls and creating and distributing traveler information can be managed from within the TIC software product. 

The first version of TIC for Road Incident Management will be available at the end of 2014 and is scheduled for use by a GEWI customer in Q1 of 2015.

ATIS/ATMS Convergence Topic of 2015 Transportation Technology Tour

"The convergence of traffic information and incident management is a trend we have observed worldwide" commented GEWI's founder Hagen Geppert.  "In early 2015 GEWI will hold another Transportation Technology Tour in North America.  This tour will serve as an information exchange about the convergence issue, to share our global traffic technology experience, and to gather additional requirements about this market".

Attendees to ITS World Congress will have an opportunity to preview TIC's new Incident Management features at the GEWI booth #2805 in the exhibit hall.

GEWI North America's CEO Jim O'Neill will be presenting a paper in the session "TPEG Traffic Services Worldwide" at 8:30am on September 10th.

Delegates include over 10,000 transportation professionals, engineers, planners, business leaders, innovators, elected officials and public agency representatives from the U.S. and around the world.  These industry professionals will meet in Detroit to experience first-hand the latest implementations of ITS technology.  

Also at the show is a fully operational and live Traffic Management Center, a Technology Showcase, an Inventors and Investors Program, and an exciting and robust program schedule.

Part of the evolution of the TIC product is a continual information exchange between GEWI and the customer to collect new project requirements, and to receive feedback on new features of the TIC system.  In July 2014, GEWI hosted customers from five of the German Federal Police agencies who have been using TIC3 since 2013.  The event was to share their general experience of using TIC to provide a traffic and travel event information service.

During the workshop, new TIC features were demonstrated and information was exchanged about how TIC could be used to resolve institutional problems such as high turnover and operator training.  As a result of this meeting, GEWI will provide a web based training system which can be shared by the various agencies to train their operators outside of a live environment.  This will be beneficial for training new operators, or refreshing operator training for those who are only occasional users of TIC.

One new TIC feature which received many favorable comments was the "Edit TIC3 Location" feature where TIC is assisting the user with a new and better way to change the location.

Benefits include saving time when referencing traffic and travel events, especially when editing long routes for events such as demonstrations, marathons, and bicycle races.  The feature is also very intuitive, needing nearly no training as it is designed to be self-learning, as easy as a smartphone application.

A preview of the new Incident Management feature was provided as well, and also met with much interest by the workshop attendees.  Another workshop is already scheduled for January of 2015.
