Greetings!

The warmer weather has arrived for much of the northern hemisphere and this signals the start of work zone season for many areas that are unable to perform road maintenance due to winter weather.

Work zones are one issue all public agencies need to deal with, along with the issue of effectively communicating the inherent delays they may cause to the public.  For this reason, GEWI has developed advanced features in TIC for dealing with complex work zone projects.  TIC will be used in Hessen Germany for harmonized capture of work zone data on highways, federal roads and rural roads from multiple government agencies.  Work zone data is collected from various systems as well as manually created by operators.

GEWI has received a renewal of a GPS probe project for the RTA in Dubai.  This is just one of many projects in which Matthias Defee is involved as Director of Customer Projects Worldwide.  Read more in Matthias' profile in this newsletter.

The ITS exhibition season has also arrived and GEWI has just returning from exhibiting and presenting on Work Zone safety at ITS Canada.  GEWI will next exhibit the 9th ITS European Conference in Dublin Ireland, 4-7 June, 2013.  Find more information and conference links below.

TIC CONNECTS:  Work Zones and Navigation

TIC Connects Nothing is more frustrating for a driver than coming upon a long traffic delay caused by a work zone which was not reported to the navigation device in the vehcile.

With the advanced state of technology today, there is no reason for a driver using a navigation device to ever be surprised by a work zone or construction project because every element of the solution is available today.

The solution can be implemented by local traffic authorities based on actual up-to-the-minute work zone information, not just using work zone plan and schedule information which may no longer be relevant due to unplanned changes and delays.

TIC for Work Zones TIC can be used to both collect and create work zone information using a TIC Smart Client application on a mobile device or computer, and even from other systems and devices.  Captured data can include a harmonized location reference, work type, status, times, and lane information such as restrictions, closures and capacities.

Road conditions can be manually created from operators from reports or automatically collected from other systems including weather stations.  Data can include surface conditions, visibility, hazards, restrictions, closures, traffic flow and more.

The resulting data can then be fully harmonized enabling the data to be consistently analyzed, used in performance reports, and distributed to information service providers who can inform and alert travelers on navigation devices, VMS signs and radio.

The TIC system can be hosted in the cloud, or by the customer, and several options exist for entering work zone data using the TIC Smart client on:

  • A desktop computer
  • A web browser
  • An iPad

These options for creating accurate work zone data simplifies the process to share information between local, regional and national agencies and other organizations.  Historical data can even be used for monitoring work zone progress and performance.

The end result is an informed driver, less traffic in work zones, reduced fuel consumption and less time lost from delays.  Most importantly, all of these factors will contribute to increased work zone safety.

GEWI to Exhibit at ITS European Conference in Dublin, Ireland

ITS European Conference 2013

GEWI will have a presence at two exhibits at the upcoming 9th European Congress and Exhibition to be held 4-7 June 2013 in Dublin, Ireland.  GEWI will be displaying the latest TIC product features in both the ITS Germany and TISA stands at the Congress.

The theme of ITS Dublin 2013 is "Real Solutions for Real Needs" which is exactly what TIC has provided as a global solution to customer traffic and travel information project requirements since 1997.

The primary focus of the Dublin 2013 Congress will be on proven deployed solutions and innovative R&D that solve real problems and deliver value for money in today's challenging economic environment.  To this end, GEWI will be demonstrating how TIC is being used to run a wide range of Traffic Information Projects of all scopes and sizes, from small city projects, to connecting 22 countries in 7 different languages.

If you would like to schedule a meeting to see a demonstration of TIC3, contact jim.oneill@gewi.com

Work Zone Project Profile:  Hessen Mobil Event Information Platform

Hessen Work Zone By summer of 2013, GEWI will deploy a TIC system for Hessen Mobil, an organization in Germany responsible for road and traffic management in Hessen, Germany.  TIC was selected as a solution to the problem of a lack of centralized information for work zones on all roads in this German federal state.  The TIC system will be replacing two legacy systems which could not provide nearly as many features available in TIC for work zone management.

TIC will be deployed as a hosted solution.  Some agencies such as city authorities will use the TIC Smart Client for Web Browsers which requires minimal system resources.  Larger agencies will use the TIC Smart Client locally installed on their systems.

Work Zone information will be created as traffic and travel data (TTE) and referenced to a digital map using TIC.  Additionally, TIC will collect work zone information from existing systems along with manually created TTE events by operators.

GEWI Customer News:  RTA Dubai Extends Agreement

Defee in Dubai Since 2009, the Roads and Transportation Authority (RTA) in Dubai has used TIC software fo creating traffic flow, and creating traffic and travel event data.  Recently, this agreement was extended for a third time.  This time for two more years.

Shown at right is GEWI Director of Customer Projects Matthias Defee (in blue) and RTA staff during a TIC user training session.

TIC is used to collect probe data from over 8,000 taxis to calculate traffic flow for the whole of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).  The traffic flow calculation is augmented by the use of fixed sensors.  Based on the harmonization of traffic flow from these sources, TIC derives traffic and travel events for the roads defined in the TMC location table.  Additionally, operators are able to create their own traffic and travel events based on information captured on the traffic control room's video wall.  Finally, TMC messages are generated by TIC and broadcast to motorists using an RDS-TMC system.
GEWI Exhibits and Presents on Work Zone Safety at ITS Canada

ITS Canada 2013
GEWI attended, exhibited and presented a paper on work zone safety at ITS Canada's 16th Annual General Meeting 26-29 May, 2013 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Ontario.

GEWI North America's CEO Jim O'Neill spoke on the topic of "Using connected vehicles to increase safety in work zones" on Monday afternoon May 27th in a session about Connected Vehicles.  This was just one of over 55 technical papers that were presented during the conference, and GEWI was one of 30 exhibitors who displayed the latest technologies in Intelligent Transportation Systems.

The conference theme was "Intelligent Transport for Smart Cities" which fit well with both the paper which GEWI presented and the TIC3 product which GEWI exhibited.  TIC3 is the result of over 15 years of product development as a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution to customer requirements from all over the world for both public and private sector transportation related projects.

TIC has been used in live traffic information systems since 1997, and is used by many types of organizations including; government agencies, police, DOT's, commercial RDS-TMC and TPEG service providers, automobile clubs, road operators, radio stations and car and device navigation manufacturers.
