Greetings!

The first generation of TIC was introduced in 1997, and now in its fourth generation, TIC has truly established itself as a trusted commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution used by government agencies as well as service providers, navigation and automobile manufacturers, toll road operators, automobile clubs, and radio stations.

TIC's flexibility allows it to be used for many types of traffic and travel information projects, with examples in this newsletter from projects around the world.

In Europe, we profile the Danish Road Directorate (DRD, a government DOT) who have purchased and continuously used TIC since 2006. The DRD have recently started testing and will soon be using TIC's new Road Incident Management (RIM) features available in the latest generation TIC3.

Over to the middle east, GEWI now powers "Smart Drive" in Dubai, UAE as described in an article below about the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA, a government DOT).

In April 2015, GEWI will again visit public agencies in North America during its new Traffic Technologies Tour 2015 (TTT), to share its experience from customer projects internationally, and to make observations on USA and Canadian requirements.  If you would like to participate, find more information and details in the article below.

Hagen Geppert recently attended the MDM Conference in Berlin, Germany and has created a solution which addresses even more German traffic data marketplace issues discussed at the conference.  Read more about that as well as GEWI's upcoming attendance at Gulf Traffic in Dubai this December.

GEWI  Implements Phase 1 of New Traffic System in Denmark

DRD Logo The Danish Road Directorate (DRD) has used TIC to create traffic and travel event information since 2006.  Recently, under competitive bid, GEWI was awarded an agreement for a new system which adds incident management features.

Phase I of the new system, which includes the TIC digital map feature, went into productive use in October 2014.  This allows for the precise entry of traffic data on any road segment and delivery of the information to the public using a variety of distribution channels.

Phase II of the project will include Road Incident Management (RIM) features which extend beyond traffic incidents to include incidents involving the road infrastructure.  This includes physical assets such as VMS signs, traffic cameras or road sensors.

The RIM features allows DRD to create pre-defined response plan templates based on factors such as incident type, location, severity and more.  The incident response can be automatically triggered by external systems or manually executed by an operator.  Operators may add additional steps if required.  All operator and system activities are logged to provide post incident analysis capabilities.

The DRD will use the TIC software to manage incidents on the State operated road network which extends nearly 4,000 km and carries about 45% of Denmark's road traffic.

For more information on Road Incident Management features of TIC, contact info@gewi.com or click here for a RIM features leaflet.

Traffic in RTA Dubai Smart Drive App Powered by GEWI

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA, a government DOT agency) of Dubai UAE recently launched a new Smart Phone app called Smart Drive, as part of their Smart City initiative.

Traffic information provided by the service is created using GEWI's TIC software. TIC is used to create traffic and travel event and traffic flow data using GPS data collected by TIC from another system.

The Smart Drive application not only enables drivers to easily navigate traffic and avoid traffic incidents, but also provides social media connectivity through e-mail, SMS, Facebook, and WhatsApp applications on mobile phones.

The RTA Smart Drive application is already available for download and installation from the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

GEWI Offers Solution to Issues Identified at MDM Conference

MDM, the German Mobility Data Marketplace held their Traffic Data conference in Berlin, Germany November 10-11th, 2014.  The goal of MDM is to make it easier for public and private organizations to access the growing number of traffic data created by cities, federal DOT's, traffic management centers, and other government and private organizations.

The MDM web portal allows users to view what type of data is available and search for specific data feeds for a particular coverage area of Germany. This includes a wide range of real-time traffic data including sensor, traffic flow, work zone information, and incident information, available in the DATEX II data format and communication protocol.

The conference was held in an "Open Space" format where attendees contributed topic suggestions which resulted in several issue specific sessions being created.  The result addressed challenges in creating a successful marketplace, one of the most challenging involving work zones, in a session attended by GEWI founder Hagen Geppert.

During the session, Mr. Geppert identified how GEWI could provide a solution to improve the quality of work zone information, in an effort to support the sustainability of MDM.  For more information about the solution contact

2015 North America Traffic Technologies Tour

Following its last successful traffic technologies tour (TTT), GEWI will be holding its next TTT in North America in April 2015.

The primary topics will be the global trends of ATIS-ATMS convergence, improving harmonized data exchange between different systems, and integrated emergency response.  Government agencies will have the opportunity to submit requests in advance for related agenda items.

In November 2010, GEWI held a North American Traffic Technologies Tour (TTT) visiting local, state, and federal agencies in the USA and Canada, discuss the key topics of location referencing, data harmonization, connected vehicles, and data exchange.

GEWI's TTT provides a unique opportunity for public/private sector information exchange and is an important factor in GEWI's product development plan to ensure the TIC product continues to meet customer requirements in global markets worldwide.

GEWI can also use the TTT discussions to express comparisons between USA and Canadian requirements and other global trends and developments GEWI has observed with its customers worldwide.

If you would like to participate in the 2015 Traffic Technologies Tour for North America, and if you have request for items related to the agenda, please contact jim.oneill@gewi.com.

View New Road Incident Management Features at Gulf Traffic Dubai

Gulf Traffic 2014 will be held  at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center in the UAE from 08 to 10 December 2014.

GEWI will again be in attendance at the conference and will be demonstrating the latest version of the TIC software which includes new features for Road Incident Management (RIM).

The new RIM features of TIC are a significant advancement in the convergence of ATIS and ATMS systems.  TIC providing superior capabilities assist operators of services to detect, verify, respond, clear, and analyze roadway incidents, whether involving vehicles or infrastructure such as cameras and traffic signaling.

Gulf Traffic 2014 also will be hosting the largest conference on parking ever held in the Middle East, and GEWI's founder and Worldwide CEO Hagen Geppert will also be available to demonstrate the parking features of the TIC software.

Not only can TIC manage incidents with parking infrastructure failure, such as VMS signs, TIC can also collect, process, and distribute live information about parking facilities.

To reserve and book a demonstration appointment during Gulf Traffic, please send an email to
hagen.geppert@gewi.com.  If you are unable to attend Gulf Traffic, please click here to view the TIC Overview video or visit www.gewi.com for more information.

TIC for Road Incident Management

Oftentimes problems associated with travel are more than just accidents and delays. Many times there are incidents that include roadway infrastructure as well as vehicles, and the clearance of all different types of incidents would be best coordinated together.

The TIC Product feature Road Incident Management provides a method to integrate this information and allow agencies to manage road incidents (as well as traffic incidents), and to keep the public informed with accurate and updated traffic and travel information.

TIC can be used to define and track pre-defined incident response plans, providing operators with a step by step process to properly respond to traffic and roadway issues. By using TIC to track the response, each action is recorded, allowing for a full review of the implementation and timing of the response, in order to measure how well the incident was handled, and whether any improvements to the response could be made.

If the incident involves roadway infrastructure, such as road sensors or VMS signs, the status of each can be recorded as well, down to and including road surface conditions (from weather sensors) to better understand how an incident developed and on review, what could be done to prevent a recurrence.

TIC can be used to help support agency services such as ATIS (Advanced Transport Information Systems), and eCall, a European initiative being launched in 2015 for new vehicles.
