The Oversize/Overweight Issue

The safe routing of Oversized, Overweight Transport (OOT) is a global concern which requires accurate real-time information to avoid routing vehicles where real-world conditions conflict with the vehicle's roadway requirements.

One potential area of conflict is through work zones. Avoiding OOT routing conflicts and providing real-time work zone data are both topics discussed in this newsletter.

GEWI's TIC for Work Zone solution, available worldwide, used in Germany since 2013, will be used for the first time in Canada in 2021.

Improving Work Zone Safety with Real-time Information from iCone and GEWI

GEWI and iCone Products are partnering to help travelers avoid and safely navigate road work projects by providing accurate and real-time travel information, which can be delivered directly to navigation devices through apps and in-car navigation systems.

Using the cloud-based, real-time data from iCone’s ConnectedTech™ devices, GEWI’s TIC Software further enables road agencies and their work zone contractors to manage information about the location and status of work zone assets, this data can in turn can be used to create Traffic and Travel Events which can be distributed to in-vehicle navigation systems, connected apps, and the web.

This data can further be used by transportation agencies to monitor and manage the progress of the work zone to maximize the safety of its work crews. GEWI’s TIC for Work Zone product feature provides a solution to support work zone planning and management throughout the entire life of the project including creating permits, real-time operations, and incident and accident management.

Avoid Oversize/Overweight Route Conflicts

Oversized and overweight transport (OOT) can provide challenges for both agencies and operators to identify conflicts along their desired route of travel.

As an added step in the permit process, TIC could be used to identify conflicts on the desired permit route. This includes reduced width caused by work zones or other factors that could present problems during the trip.

TIC's relation window could be used to proactively detect problems along the desired route being filed for a permit.

Additionally, a Holiday feature can be related to OOT to be used to identify problems on the road as well as potential problems with restrictions.

First Canadian Customer to use TIC for Work Zone Solution

GEWI's TIC for Work Zone solution is used in many countries around the world, and in 2021 will also be used by a major City in Canada.

The solution is very popular with public agencies the all-in-one system supports work zone planning permitting and operations, enables intuitive and fast data entry, works with multiple connected products, eliminates conflict, and uses multiple information sources.

The Power of an Off-the-Shelf Solution

In 1997, GEWI launched TMC Office, which was the first version of what is today known at the TIC Software product.

Every week for the past 23 years, a new version of the software has been made available for testing. Then, on a quarterly basis, made available as a new release to GEWI customers.

Customers are not required to update to the latest version, but most choose to update in order to benefit from the latest changes.

Software changes can be requested by customers right from the TIC Software. The customer is then able to track the status of their change request through the entire process.

So far in 2020, the GEWI Product Development team has implemented 466 changes with over 100 more planned for the remainder of the year.

Customers licensed for these features enjoy the ability to use the updates at no additional cost.

Customer engagement and involvement in GEWI product development has resulted in a continuous product improvement process which has enabled the TIC Software product to be at the forefront of features and benefits for customers in 31 countries worldwide.

25 year traffic industry veteran Danny Woolard marked his 5th year with GEWI as Director, Business Development, focusing on emerging markets for GEWI.

Prior to joining GEWI, Danny worked for INRIX following five years working for Australian Traffic and Telematics service provider Intelematics. Previous to his time in Australia he was Technical Director of ITIS Holdings, following the acquisition of Communications & Measurement Technologies Ltd, a company he founded and ran for over 11 years.
